How to Shift Your Identity to Manifest What You Want
By Eden Doidge · Founder of NEW STATE
If you’re trying to manifest something, there’s an easy trap to fall into.
You spend a lot of time thinking about what you want.
More money. A relationship. A thriving business. A new home. A different life.
But every time you think about it, you’re still experiencing yourself as the person who wants it.
Identity shifting approaches manifestation differently.
Instead of repeatedly asking:
“How do I get this?”
you begin asking:
“Who am I when this is already my life?”
Then you practise experiencing life from there.
That’s the shift.
What does identity shifting mean in manifestation?
In manifestation, identity shifting generally means changing the version of yourself you’re experiencing life from.
Think about the difference between these two statements:
“I really want my business to succeed.”
and:
“My business is thriving. I’m in demand.”
The first statement looks toward the desire.
The second begins from its fulfilment.
That’s a small change in language, but it represents a much bigger change in perspective.
One is the person waiting.
The other is the person experiencing.
NEW STATE calls the deliberate practice of returning to that second perspective Identity Rehearsal.
Identity shifting is the change. Identity Rehearsal is the practice.
The manifestation trap: rehearsing wanting
You can spend a surprising amount of time thinking about a desire without ever experiencing it as fulfilled.
You visualise it. Write about it. Talk about it. Check for it. Wonder when it's coming. Ask whether you're doing the technique correctly.
But underneath all of that can remain the same assumption:
I don’t have it yet.
In other words, you may be rehearsing wanting extremely well.
The aim of Identity Rehearsal is different.
You’re not trying to become better at wanting the life.
You’re practising experiencing life from the State in which the desire is already fulfilled.
Thinking OF versus thinking FROM
This distinction sits at the heart of NEW STATE.
Thinking OF the desire means looking at it from where you currently stand.
Thinking FROM the fulfilled State means temporarily taking the perspective of the person for whom it is already part of life.
For example:
Thinking OF
“I want to earn more money.”
Thinking FROM
“My income is excellent.”
Thinking OF
“I hope my business takes off.”
Thinking FROM
“My business is thriving. I'm in demand.”
Thinking OF
“I want a loving relationship.”
Thinking FROM
“I feel loved and chosen. I love our life together.”
The difference isn’t about finding more powerful words.
It’s about the position you’re occupying internally.
One looks at the desired life.
The other looks from it.
Neville Goddard and the wish fulfilled
Neville Goddard taught this distinction through what he called assuming the State of the wish fulfilled.
The idea was not simply to think positively about something you hoped would happen.
It was to imagine and experience from the premise that the desired condition was already fulfilled.
Instead of standing outside the desired reality and looking toward it, you take its perspective internally.
If the desire were already fulfilled:
What would you naturally think? What would you expect? What would feel ordinary now? What would you say about your life?
Those questions move attention away from chasing the outcome and toward experiencing the State.
How to shift your identity for manifestation
You don’t need to construct an entirely new personality.
Start with what you actually want.
1. Name the desire
Ask:
What do I really want?
Be direct.
“I want to be completely debt free.” “I want my business to make $20,000 a month.” “I want a loving relationship.” “I want to be highly valued and well paid for my work.”
Don’t begin by deciding what you’re supposed to want.
Start with the actual desire.
2. Move to fulfilment
Now remove the wanting.
If this were already your life, what would be true?
Not
“I am becoming debt free.”
But
“I am completely debt free.”
Not
“My business is growing toward $20,000 a month.”
But
“My business makes $20,000 a month.”
Not
“I am attracting a loving relationship.”
But
“I love being with my partner.”
The rehearsal begins at fulfilment.
3. Ask what you would naturally think from there
This is where the new identity becomes personal.
Suppose your business is already thriving.
Perhaps you naturally think:
“I'm in demand.” “People value what I do.” “My work opens amazing opportunities.” “My income is excellent.” “This level of success feels natural to me.”
You don’t need fifty statements.
You need the few that put you inside the State.
4. Rehearse from that perspective
Return to those thoughts deliberately.
Not because you’re trying to convince yourself through force.
Not because you’re pretending your current circumstances don’t exist.
You’re becoming familiar with another way of experiencing yourself.
Return to it.
Then return again.
The aim is naturalness.
What if the new identity doesn’t feel true?
That’s okay.
One of the biggest misunderstandings around identity shifting is that you must somehow believe the new identity completely before you can use it.
But if it already felt completely natural, there would be little need to rehearse it.
A desired State can initially feel unfamiliar simply because it is unfamiliar.
It doesn’t have to feel true yet. That’s why you rehearse it.
You don’t need to replace:
“I am completely debt free.”
with:
“I am slowly getting better with money.”
if being completely debt free is what you actually want.
That turns the rehearsal back into a journey toward the desire.
Instead, keep the fulfilled State intact.
Rehearsal is what gives you the opportunity to become more familiar with it.
You don’t rehearse it because it already feels true. You rehearse it until it feels natural.
Feeling doesn’t mean forcing emotion
“Feeling the wish fulfilled” can sound as though you’re supposed to generate an enormous emotional high.
You don’t need to manufacture excitement.
You don’t need goosebumps.
You don’t need to feel euphoric.
Think about things that are already normal in your life.
You usually don’t spend the day overwhelmed with emotion because they’re yours.
They’re simply part of your life.
That’s closer to the quality we’re looking for.
Of course this is my life.
The feeling can be quiet.
Familiar.
Ordinary.
Natural.
Identity shifting isn’t pretending
There’s another important distinction.
If your bank account currently says $2,000, Identity Rehearsal doesn’t require you to pretend the banking app says $200,000.
You can deal intelligently with the circumstances in front of you.
Pay bills. Make decisions. Go to work. Have difficult conversations.
And still deliberately rehearse another internal State.
The practice concerns the perspective you’re becoming familiar with.
It doesn’t require denying physical facts.
A simple identity shifting example for money
Suppose the desire is financial freedom.
The wanting State
“I really need more money.” “I hope something changes.” “When is this going to happen?” “Why am I still stuck here?”
The fulfilled State
“I am completely debt free.” “Everything is paid.” “My income is excellent.” “I always have more than enough.” “Money feels secure and abundant.”
Identity Rehearsal doesn’t try to improve those sentences.
It changes the standpoint.
Notice that the script doesn’t explain how you got there.
It doesn’t revisit the struggle.
It doesn’t describe what used to be true.
It states what is true now and stays there.
A simple identity shifting example for relationships
The wanting State
“I hope I meet somebody.” “I want to feel chosen.” “I wonder when I'll find the right person.”
The fulfilled State
“I feel loved and chosen.” “I love being with my partner.” “I love going out together.” “Our relationship feels easy.” “I love our life together.”
Again, you’re not rehearsing finding the relationship.
You’re rehearsing from the relationship.
A simple identity shifting example for success
The wanting State
“I want to become successful.” “I hope people notice my work.” “I need more opportunities.”
The fulfilled State
“I'm in demand.” “People value what I bring.” “My name is known amongst successful people.” “People reach out because they want to work with me.” “My work opens bigger opportunities.” “Success feels natural to me.”
Short. Direct. Fulfilled.
How long should you rehearse a new identity?
There isn’t a magic number.
Don’t turn rehearsal into another countdown:
“It’s day 17. Why hasn’t anything happened?”
That puts your attention straight back onto waiting and checking.
A more useful question is:
“Is this State becoming more natural to me?”
At first, you may deliberately enter it.
Later, some of its thoughts and expectations may begin to feel more familiar.
The aim isn’t to complete a prescribed number of repetitions.
The aim is naturalness.
Do you need to act like the new identity?
Action can matter.
But be careful with the phrase “act as if.”
It doesn’t mean behaving recklessly or pretending circumstances are different from what they are.
If your desired State is financial abundance, “acting as if” doesn’t mean spending money you don’t have.
A more useful question is:
“What would feel natural to me from this State?”
Perhaps you make a phone call you’ve been avoiding.
Apply for something.
Create something.
Set a boundary.
Ask for the opportunity.
Or perhaps the immediate shift is simply in how you interpret what’s happening.
The point isn’t to perform a character for other people.
It’s to begin responding from a different internal standpoint.
Stop checking whether you’ve shifted
There’s an irony in identity work.
You can spend so much time asking:
“Have I shifted yet?”
that you keep returning to the identity of someone waiting to shift.
You don’t need to constantly measure yourself.
Return to the State.
Live your day.
Return again when you want to.
Rehearsal doesn’t need to become another obsession.
What is Identity Rehearsal?
Identity Rehearsal is NEW STATE’s name for deliberately practising life from the State you want to inhabit.
The process is simple:
Desire → Assume → Experience from → Rehearse → Naturalness
Start with what you really want.
Assume the fulfilled State for the purpose of rehearsal.
Experience life from there.
Return to it.
Let familiarity grow.
That’s Identity Rehearsal.
And that’s the difference between endlessly thinking about the life you want and beginning to experience it from within.
Try this now
Ask yourself:
What do I really want?
Choose one desire.
Now remove the wanting.
Assume, just for this exercise, that it’s already part of your life.
Complete these three sentences:
It is now true that... I naturally expect... It feels normal to me that...
Keep your answers short.
Don’t explain how it happened.
Don’t revisit the old situation.
State what is now true. Stay there.
Create your own New State
Knowing what you want is easy.
Finding the few thoughts that genuinely belong to the fulfilled State can be harder.
NEW STATE begins with one simple question:
What do you really want?
A private adaptive interview learns what that life means to you and creates a personalised first-person Identity Rehearsal written from inside it.
Your imagination. Your life. Your answers. NEW STATE helps put it into words.
